UPCOMING EVENTS

MV Litter Free Clean Up Days occur every month between April and November.  Come join us for these Clean Up Days in 2025.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

  • July 2022 - Researched opportunities to make a difference
  • August 2022 - Applied to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to Adopt a Bike Path in Edgartown, MA.  Created the Group MV Litter Free
  • September 2022 - Approved as the first Adopt a Bike Path in MA!
  • Started monthly clean ups
  • Launched Luke's Trash Talk Instagram series
  • November 2022 - attended our first Climate Cafe to connect with other MV groups and non-profits working to protect the local environment.  We've continued to meet with the group monthly to discuss topics like reducing waste and sustainability.
  • December 2022 - launched website to provide information about our organization and clean up dates
  • January 2023 - presented to the Lexington Green Team Coordinators to share information about the Adopt a Bike Path program
  • February 2023 - Luke designed a logo and collaborated with graphic designer to bring the creation to life
  • February 2023 - We did an extra clean up this month and couldn't believe what we found - 28 nip bottles along one mile of the path
  • March 2023 - submitted letter of support for the Edgartown Nip Bottle Ban to the Edgartown Select Board Members
  • Set 2023 calendar
  • Volunteer Training by attending the SCORE webinar on Simplifying Social Media Marketing for Small Business
  • Summer 2023 - Coordinated new volunteers to help clean up each month
  • Spring 2024 - We stayed the course to clean the bike path each month.  We are so grateful to new volunteers that have helped out to support our efforts.
  • Summer 2024 - A second bike path has been adopted by our volunteer friends, Sam and Keith.  They are now the stewards of Sam's Sidekicks on the bike path stretch along State Beach.
  • Goals for 2025 - We plan to renew our Bike Path Adoption and we plan to lobby the Massachusetts government to require driving candidates to perform highway clean up for a few hours to be eligible to receive their drivers license.

BIG NEWS

  • September 2022 - So proud to be the First "Adopt a Bike Path" in Massachusetts.  The Massachusetts Department of Transportation was incredibly supportive of our proposal to create a new adoption category and even created a new sign design.  We hope to inspire others to become stewards of these amazing public spaces.
  • January 2023 - Edgartown and Oak Bluffs announced Ban on the Sale of Nip Bottle proposals on Town Meeting Agendas.  MV Litter Free supports this proposal.  Nips are the number two most frequently picked up item found on our trash collection (second to cigarette butts.)  We hope this ban will reduce nip litter.
  • April 2023 - Nip Bottle Ban passed in Edgartown!  We showed our support by writing letters to the Select Board, Letter to the Editor of MV Times, and watching the Town Meeting.
  • May 2023 - Participated in the first Climate Action Fair.  We had an information table, recruited volunteers and gave away reusable car trash bags.
  • January 2024 - Luke was awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award for completing 50 volunteer hours for MV Litter Free in 2023.
